Independent study is a credit bearing course offered through most major departments and programs taken during an academic semester. The purpose of Independent study is to enable students to work on a defined research project under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Such projects generally require 10-15 hours of work per week and are expected to result in a final product or report for which the student receives a letter grade. Independent study courses count toward the 34 course credits needed for graduation and toward the Small Group Learning Experience (SGLE).
The IGSP Independent Study consists of individual research in a genome sciences (293/294) or policy (293-1/294-1) topic of special interest under the supervision of a faculty member, the major product of which is a substantive paper or written report containing significant analysis and interpretation of a previously approved topic. The IGSP Independent Study meets the research experience requirement for the Certificate in Genome Sciences & Policy as well as the general requirement of a curriculum research (R). Independent Studies conducted in other departments such as Biology or Public Policy may count toward the research experience requirement for the Certificate in Genome Sciences & Policy with approval from DUS Genome Sciences & Policy (please see “Request Form for Approval for Research Experience Independent Study for Genome Certificate" for further information and application). Independent Study is open to all qualified students with consent of supervising instructor and IGSP Director of Undergraduate Studies. The IGSP Independent Study may be repeated. For more information, please contact the IGSP Education Office.
