"Introduction to SPSS"

Presented By: Pontus Leander

The Statistical Package of Social Science (SPSS) is probably the most user-friendly statistical program for social science students and researchers. This short course, split into two sessions, will introduce its interface, entering data collected with questionnaires, merging files, recoding and computing new variables, restructure data files, running simple analyses, editing output tables, and creating graphs. The target audience is novice researchers who have little experience with the statistical software but want to start some data-related research work.

Workshop leaders will discuss the process of choosing and declaring a major at Duke. Topics will include: the "real" reasons one should choose a particular major, introduction to the LRP tools in ACES and how to use them, how to plan effectively to meet with one's academic advisor for LRP approval, what to do AFTER major declaration, and what to expect when joining a department. Join two career counselors from the Duke University Career Center on 2/16 as they set the stage for the IGSP Health Career Explorations Series. You will leave this interactive workshop with strategies on how to think critically about your career, build relationships, and the best ways to articulate your professional strengths in any situation.

Topics to be covered include: An introduction to SAS Windows; the basics of SAS programs; the data and proc commands; SAS libraries; reading raw data; creating new variables, recoding, and handling missing data; frequencies, contents, and univariate descriptions; cross-tabulation; descriptive statistics by groups; how to select observations and variables; how to sort, concatenate and merge data sets; data management in SAS; creating raw data sets; converting files from other applications to SAS; statistical procedures; graphs and charts.

Learn how to develop your own experiments in MediaLab. During this training session you will learn to run, build, and modify your own experiments. This training session will first do a trial-run through a short experiment, and then we'll learn how to build that experiment from the ground up. Once we have the basics, we'll introduce some simple ways to enhance the functionality and professional appearance of any study you may wish to run.
