Programmatic Areas

The IGSP's research in genomic medicine brings together programs, initiatives and experts working in various areas of medicine – from cardiovascular and infectious disease to cancer and primary care – all dedicated to translating genomic information into practical tools designed to inform clinical decision making and medical practice. It is our overarching aim to open up a pipeline of progress, allowing genomic advances to flow from discovery to translation to implementation.

  • Infectious Disease Genomics: Through close collaborations with investigators in the Division of Infectious Diseases, the IGSP's research in Genomic Medicine has launched a progressive program in infectious disease genomics aimed to develop a more precise means of guiding anti-infective therapeutics in the acute care setting using multidimensional genomic signatures.
  • Cancer Genomics: Our cancer genomics program is designed to unravel the underlying biology of cancer and to identify genomic and other clinical information that may be informative about an individual’s risk for disease, or the likelihood they will respond to a certain type of treatment.
  • Cardiovascular Genomics: Studies in cardiovascular genomics range from basic mechanistic approaches to the identification of high-risk groups and genomic predictors, to incorporation of genomic tools into daily clinical decision-making.
  • Environmental Genomics: Genomic studies in both animals and humans should allow Duke investigators to gain valuable insight into our responses to environmental exposures and help facilitate new treatment approaches.
  • Pharmacogenomics: Researchers in genomics medicine are engaged in research efforts designed to explore the use of genomic information to prescribe the right drugs to the right patients at the right dose, with particular focus in cardiovascular therapies and cancer.
